McGown Hardware Store records, 1851-1983.

The 19th century portion of the records of the McGown Hardware Store of Cooperstown, N.Y. covers the period during which Horace Hooker ran the business. The bulk of the collection, 1913 to its closing in 1982, is from the period of the McGown family. The McGowns kept very well organized records, and many of the series in the collection are long and fairly complete runs. Most of the collection consists of invoices from companies McGown Hardware purchased wares from, its duplicates of customer paid statements, inventories, and hardware dealers' trade catalogs. Other notable records include checkbooks, orders, job files, payroll, ledger sheets, and bad debt records. Additionally, there are blueprints of businesses, churches, schools, private residences, and other buildings in Cooperstown, including the Baseball Museum, Bassett Hospital, Doubleday Field, the Farmers' Museum, Fenimore House, and the Presbyterian Church.

Horace M. Hooker and Stephen G. Browning opened a retail hardware store in the village of Cooperstown, N.Y. in 1858. They specialized in stoves and tin and iron building supplies, and had a tin shop on the second floor.
